The start of the race was marked by an unexpected flight between Ferrari and Porsche, Jarier managing to interfere between Gounon and Olofsson. The Porsche than moved down because of an important overseer, before being violantly eliminated by a collision with Grouillard's McLaren: "My braking pedal suddenly went to the floor" said Jarier, " I spun in order to stop but I could not avoid the McLaren. In any case I am now sure that a Porsche is still able to win".Before this accident, Giroix-Corraz-Deletraz took the 3rd place but a defective gear lever was going to delay the McLaren. Then Bouchut's Vanturi, who came back at the 8th position, pursued the Ferraris: whereas the French manufacturer fights to survive, Christophe's performance became suddenly a symbol. Despite clutch problems, the Vanturi stayed among the first six before Bouchut made an off in the last half hour, due to brake problems. But what is certain now is that Vanturi is still competitive in GT races! Once the threats Porsche and Vanturi disappeared, the McLarens started being dangerous. After a gentle start, Weaver-Bellm came up to the 2nd position after the hit between Jarier and Grouillard which took place in the 24th lap. Starting from the back of the grid after his off during the practice, Raphanel made a fantastic comeback, but was stopped after an hour by suspension breaking. It was then Nielsen's turn to come back quickly after being delayed by spin and ignition problems. But a broken transmission forced him to retire. After one hour and a half, the only McLaren still in the fight for victory was Weaver-Bellm's Faster than Della Noce. Weaver took advantage of his double stint to take the lead, whereas Eric Bernard lost the contact after a puncture. From this moment on, Weaver-Belim made the difference thanks to their homogeneity and the strategy developed by GTC with the Michelin tyres. Everything has been perferct for the Gulf Mc Laren and the Ferraris had to be satisfied with the two other steps of the podium ... awaiting a victory, perhaps in Monza ...
Bob Wollek and Franz Konrad have worked hard but they had roadholding and exhaust problems. They finished first of the Porsche teams with two laps lead on Kaufmann-Hezermans, also excellent on their Freisinger 911. Jan Lammers' Lotus V8 came back from the 12th to the 3rd position before having clutch and exhaust problems which caused his retirement. Graham-Velay-Faraut (Venturi) had a great race but had to retire due to electric problems. Quattro Racing's mechanics also made a great job, reaching the finish line, after working all night to repair the engine.
The GT2s also fought hard to ensure a great show for 10.000 spectators present. The Marcos quickly had to retire due to gearbox problems but the Porsches followed one another on the first position. First leaders, Kalleners-Eichmann-Ruch (Roock Racing) have threatened Von Garzen-Hübner (Oberbayern). The 3rd position seemed to be promised to Goueslard-Ortell-Ahrie but Larbre's car stopped because it quite ran out of petrol and Calderari-Bryner took advantage of this situation to step on the podium. Ortalli kept the 4th position in front of the Callaway of Cappeli-Munari-Spinalli. Also present at the finish: the Morgan +8 GTR of Morgan-Wykaham.
